Understanding Glove Weights
8 oz — Lightweight option commonly used for bag or pad work by smaller athletes.
10 oz — Suitable for bag work, mitt training, and certain competition applications depending on applicable rules.
12 oz — A versatile choice for general boxing and fitness training.
14 oz — Provides additional padding and is commonly selected for regular training.
16 oz — Commonly used for sparring because of the additional padding. Many gyms and coaches prefer or require 16 oz gloves for sparring.
18 oz — An option for larger athletes or training situations where additional glove weight and padding are preferred.
How Should Boxing Gloves Fit?
Your gloves should feel snug and secure without being painfully tight.
When wearing your gloves:
- Your fingers should sit comfortably inside the glove.
- Your fingertips should not feel excessively compressed.
- Your wrist should feel properly supported.
- Your hand should not move excessively inside the glove.
- You should be able to form a comfortable fist.
Remember to consider the additional space required for hand wraps.
Hand Wraps Matter
We recommend checking glove fit while wearing the type of hand wraps you normally use during training.
Hand wraps add some volume around your hands and wrists, so a glove that fits perfectly without wraps may feel tighter once wraps are added.
Training vs. Sparring
For bag and pad training, lighter gloves may be appropriate depending on your body weight, training style, and coach's recommendation.
For sparring, additional padding is generally preferred. Always follow your gym or coach's glove requirements before sparring.
